disco-the-bill-bernstein-photographs-1

Disco takes the viewer on an access-all-areas tour of late-70s New York nightlife. “Who were these people of the night... ? It was the Posers. The Watchers. The Posers watching other Posers watching the Watchers, watching the Dancers, watching themselves.” Bernstein’s eye was drawn to the characters that lived for the night, rather than the celebrities, the unknown men and women who were transformed by the nightclub haze, and this is one reason his photographs from this time feel so authentic and immersive. All the photographs featured were shot by Bernstein from 1978-80.

k1x-x-lee-x-richie-culver

K1X x Lee x Richie Culver

K1X’ unique street basketball DNA is alienatedly showcased in traditional Lee denim jackets. Borders of art, street and denim blur alongside Richie’s art pieces. The project is a perfect example of art x street fashion. The exploratory and improvisational approach to making art we find in Richie Culver’s growing oeuvre can be seen as an outcome of the tensions between binary cultural and social opposites — provincial vs. cosmopolitan; cash-strapped vs. affluent; art museum highs vs. street-cultural lows. In what seems an examination of ones experience and inner self, the material outcome of this attitude to creativity can take any one of a range of forms, from gritty documentary photography (much of it made during a period working on a trailer park) to urban bricolage, from primitively executed drawings and paintings through to video. Highly style conscious and yet pragmatic, there is a kind of punk aesthetic at work in Culver’s approach both to art-making and to exhibiting. Richie Culvers work embodies a level of honesty and vulnerability and he has what a lot of young artists today strive for – the artist lifestyle.

vans-x-wtaps

Vans x WTAPS

After nearly a decade of collaborations between them, Vans and WTAPS come together again to unveil an eight-piece footwear capsule for Vault by Vans. The project takes inspiration in shape from iconic footwear silhouettes in rebuilding from the ground up the Vans Original Classics, using the same design specifications as their first size runs. To be released September 12th in limited quantities, the line promises to its audience an assortment of Original Classics that combine the design legacies of both brands. The collaboration roots itself in the philosophy of material-worth derived from Japanese craftsmen.

To begin, the first silhouette is a trio of OG Era LX. With a color-way heavily inspired by Japanese school uniform and the “uwabaki” concepts, this style simply replicates the four colors that denote a Japanese student’s grade level. Second to the table is the OG Sk8-Hi LX which combines a set of materials and tones that channel the vintage styling of the iconic Vans Caballero. Featuring embossed reptile nubuck and durable suede reinforcements, this material build can be seen once again on the OG Sk8-Hi LX in grey/black and all-black styles. The final silhouette is the OG Style 36 LX which was created with unity in mind. Taking one hue to all parts of the shoe, the OG Style 36 LX introduces black/black, navy/navy and burgundy/burgundy versions of itself in the Vault by Vans x WTAPS collection.

return-of-the-rudeboy-2

Return of the Rudeboy

‘The Return of the Rudeboy' was an immersive exhibition last year at Somerset House in London exploring the style, swagger and significance of the 21st century Rudeboy, including original photography, film, installations and a programme of live events. Created by Photographer and Film maker Dean Chalkley and Creative Director Harris Elliott, the depiction reveals a collective of sharply dressed individuals who exemplify an important and rarely documented subculture. The duo has photographed over 60 sharply dressed individuals from across the UK, all of whom embody the essence of what it is to be a Rudeboy (or Rudie) in the 21st century, to document the life, style and attitude of this growing urban group. Originating from the streets of Kingston, Jamaica in the late 1950s, Rudeboy or Rudie came to represent the young rebels who wore distinctively sharp sartorial styles such as Mohair suits, thin ties and pork pie hats. The ‘Return of the Rudeboy’ exhibition has now been encapsulated into a beautifully printed 128-page hard cover book. Containing unseen images, essays on Rudeboy heritage and culture and references to the curated spaces at the Somerset House exhibition.
