frank-ocean

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean has character. He's rare. In a world that divvies up art by genre, that constantly seeks to quantify cool, he is impossible to miss, like a panda bear in a pine forest. And over the past year or so, he's become harder and harder to ignore. Frank had long labored behind the curtain—writing for Brandy, Justin Bieber, and John Legend—but after hooking up with L.A.'s Odd Future collective, he self-released 2011's nostalgia, ULTRA. mixtape, and his own star quickly rose. Original songs like "Novacane" and "Swim Good" showcased his knack for riveting storytelling and arrangement, climbed the R&B charts, and led to collaborations with Beyoncé, and Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Pre-order his debut album here.

the-rolling-stones-50-making-of-the-cover

The cover of the new book, The Rolling Stones: 50, was realised through a collaborative effort between artist Ian Wright and the art direction team at Studio Fury. Ian and Stephen Kennedy (creative director at Studio Fury) first worked together on album art for Ian Brown’s ‘Golden Greats’. When the Rolling Stones management and The Mirror approached Studio Fury about producing artwork for the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary, Stephen and colleague Jimmy Tilley instantly knew that Ian’s work was a perfect fit for a cover image that needed to be both iconic but also incorporate hundreds of images. With privileged access to The Mirror’s extensive archive of Rolling Stones photographs, Studio Fury set about selecting and processing images of Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie into circular crops that could be made into button badges. Have a look at the creative process here.

StyleLikeU

A StyleLikeU Production, Directed by Magdalena Wosinska Starring Scout Larue Willis

As I slammed the door to the way of life I had become conditioned to after twenty years of inundation and repression in the form of my childhood home I let out the most primal of screams. And with this scream the most sudden release of the maddening mantras of an upbringing I had yet to face the horrors of. Clad in leathers, silks, turquoise, and blue jeans I set off before first light, seeking a truth as painful as it was freeing. I will yank that rotted tooth of deceit from the roots and god willing I will throw it into fiery seas, with this sacrifice will my long burdened heart remain disquieted?

Noma: Staff Meal

What the Band of Chefs at the World's Best Restaurant Cook For Each Other

Danish photographer and filmmaker Simon Ladefoged captures a never-before-documented dimension of Noma, revealing what the chefs at the award-winning eatery cook for their own pre-service meal. Famed for artful Nordic dishes involving delicate, laborious work such as preening deep-fried moss and drying wafers of scallop, Copenhagen's gastronomic mecca re-energizes its chefs with the daily ritual of a boisterous communal staff lunch, held at 5pm before the evening’s guests start pouring in. Granted exclusive access to the Noma kitchens, Ladefoged produced an aesthetic portrait of the 37-strong team, culled from 22 countries, carefully preparing what founder René Redzepi calls their “family meal.” “While filming I was amazed by two things—the number of chefs in the kitchen and the amount of energy they put into their staff lunch,” says the director. “Other restaurants will just grab something for lunch, but this is a really big thing at Noma, which shows a lot about the people who work there, the mentality and the way it’s run.” Get inspired by the book Copenhagen from Noma.

Storm x The White Briefs

Old time friends Peter Simonsson, founder of white Briefs and Rasmus Storm joined forces to create the Storm shirt. A redefined granddad shirt, sporty, masculine and comfortable. The granddad shirt and its classic design, Rasmus’s favorite kind of shirt, was the main influencer for the design process during the collaboration. By adding well-made details, like the longer back side, the shirt is made for interesting layered looks with blazers or sweat shirts.

The Storm shirt is a homage to new classics and a 15-year-old friendship.

Interview ÷rjan Andersson

Last wednesday famous founder of Cheap Monday and Weekday, Örjan Andersson visited Storm and talked with us about his inspiration and the concept behind his new label Ö till A.

Where you draw your inspiration from ? "My biggest inspiration is the rich history of jeans itself. I’m fascinated by the tailoring skills that evolved with jeans over the past 150 years, including all old details that still dominating the look of the garment. As well as the important role of jeans in subcultures. A strong influence for my brand and jeans design in genral is the DIY attitude from the punk culture.

What makes your jeans special? "What distinguish me from most other designers is my approach to fashion. I started working in a jeans store when I was 19-years-old and for more than ten years on the floor I learned what problems customers are fighting while buying jeans. The experience of standing in a jeans store during the 90’s helping people find the right size and fit is still important for my creation of jeans. I’m very inspired to make jeans with high quality and design combined with nice cuts and fitting allways with denim in focus. Ö till A are not only my initials but also the end and the beginning of the Swedish alphabet It means that you can do the same thing in several ways, backwards or differently if it feels good and fit your personality. Jeans can interpreted in many ways in the fashion alphabet, as a fashion item or a necessity. It’s up to the carrier, if he or her want’s to see this clothing item from the end middle or the beginning.

How would you describe your jean design? "It’s a fashion denim look with a handsome and clean rock-look combined with traditional jeans attributes."

What can we expect in the future? "For now the main focus will be on jeans accompanied with new tees, jackets, shirts and knitwear ...but you never really know what’s going to happen in the future, right?"

interview-with-nigo

Interview with Nigo

This is an interview with founder of the limited edition vintage label Human Made. Nigo who is also the force behind cult brand A Bathing Ape and a long-term vintage enthusiast reveals the details that distinguish a collector’s item. (interview from Nowness)

Archival selection Generally, I’m only interested in things up until 1950. It’s hard to explain how I select pieces. From a vintage-history viewpoint it’s a weird selection, but it’s just the things that speak to me most.

Vintage longing I don’t tend to search for things because I like the idea that you come across something and decide at that time if you like it or not. But I want a Lee cowboy jacket, a denim jacket with blanket lining. I found one but it was damaged, and the dealer had repaired it so I couldn’t buy it.

Memorable story The first time I ever bought a vintage garment I was 15. It was a Levi’s Type 2 jacket. The thing was shredded, falling to pieces. My mum was totally pissed off and couldn’t imagine that I’d bought a jacket with holes in it. She gave me hell for it. I’ve still got the jacket now.

Man-made inspirations I didn’t want to make anything for Human Made without actually having the garment to look at, inspect and see how it’s put together. Nothing has come from photographs. Pretty much everything is from my own collection, but rearranged.
